In 2009, the remittance flows to Latin America and the Caribbean were down to $58 billion, which was 11 percent lower than in 2008. It was the first decline in the last 25 years due to the economic downturn. According to Inter-American Development Bank estimates, over three-quarters of remittances to these countries originate in the United States.
