This paper proposes to answer these, and similar questions, by developing a new
data set composed of 24 large, labor-exporting countries. This data set includes all those developing countries which received more than $500 million dollars in official worker remmittances in the year 2000.3 To ensure representativeness, the data set includes countries drawn from each major region of the developing world: Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa, Europe and Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
